Salt production plant in Pag

Anyone traveling to the city of Pag from Zadar will not only experience the transition from green mainland hills to a stony barren, bizarre island, but also discover a real treasure. Approximately 5 to 8 kilometers from the city, at the same elevation of Svilno, the route following road 106 becomes framed by large, divided areas of water and dazzling white fields. Salt is just as typical in Pag as its world-famous cheese, lamb and lace.

The production of this "white gold" has been traced back to the 9th century – it is believed, however, that the Romans also reaped the fine white crystals from the sea here. Basically, the production has changed little since: the extremely clean sea water is channeled into pools that dry out quickly because of the strong sunlight and the constantly blowing winds. For about 25 years, this ancient culture technology has been supplemented by modern drying technology. To the south of the city of Pag, this natural, very pure and fine sea salt, which is known and appreciated worldwide, is produced in this way on around 2.5 million square meters. The huge salt basins, including production facilities and salt deposits are now seen as a symbol of the island and is known as being one of the oldest salt-works east of the Adriatic. The salt basins also belong to Solana Pag, one of the largest and most important companies in the Kvarner Bay.

The company, understanding the importance of the salt and its production for the region, offers interesting tours of the salt production facility. Just because the tours are held irregularly during the week, doesn't mean you shouldn't bother. Those who want to play it safe should sign-up for a guided tour 1-2 days before the desired date.
