Arbanija

The town of Arbanija lie on the northern coast of the Island of Ciovo, near Trogir and around 30 km from Split. The idyllic village is situated between Slatine and Mastrinka, placing it amongst good company when it comes to Croatian resorts that have many beaches. There are at least eight coastal areas around Arbanija that are well worth a beach visit. With 370 inhabitants, Arbanija is a tranquil village that promises a relaxing holiday. Especially interesting is the old Sveti Kriz Monastery hidden between the modern apartments that line up along the coastal road.

The monastery was built directly on the water in 1476, so that it simultaneously served to protect against the attacks of the Turks. The Gothic complex has a massive bell tower, which should have radiated a fortress-like strength that was likely to deter enemies from afar. The interior is decorated with many Gothic paintings - including the "Crucifixion of Jesus" by the engraver Juri Petrovic. You may only view the monastery if you register for a tour.

In terms of regional dishes Arbanija has several small restaurants and pubs, where you can spend an enjoyable evening with a good glass of wine and a traditional meal. Okrug Gonki lying to the west of the Island of Ciovo has a more colorful nightlife and can be reached via a bridge connecting Arbanija directly to the island.
