Lovran

Mild climate, constantly green vegetation and a medieval city center all come together to make the spa resort of Lovran one of the most popular holiday destinations in the Opatija Riviera lying only 5 kilometers south of the main center. Lovran has been developing into a destination well-visited by foreigners since the 1890's. This boost in tourism also had a lot to do with the neighboring city of Opatija. What was fascinating about Lovran then is still fascinating today like the wonderful climate and the  surrounding Ucka Mountains. Lovran is protected from the cold winds in winter by the Ucka mountains and only gets soft breezes in the summer time. Due to its mild climate, Lovran has been a climatic spa resort since 1905.

Around 4000 people live in Lovran which was the first settlement on the Kvarner Bay. Its very varied past can be seen in the medieval eastern core of the city. The historical center is situated on a small peninsula whose ambiance is created by hundred year old churches peaking out from narrow alleyways which sit in contrast to the imposing villas from the Austrian- Hungarian Empire.

"Entrance" into the city is possible through the city gate on the city tower which is the only remaining structure from the former fortress. The Sveti Juraj Cathedral (12th C) is worth a visit and, alongside other historical buildings, make certain that Lovran is a charming city- despite the fact that tourism is developing the cityscape. Naturally worth mentioning are the various leisure and entertainment activities that are offered in Lovran, as well as its widely-varied gastronomy. The Faschings Festival is just as popular with the locals as with the tourists and takes place in January and February when the colorfully costumed residents make their through way through the streets. Another highlight is the "Marunada" Festival in October. It is the traditional Chestnut Festival of Lovran that has taken place since 1973. The fine chestnuts "Maruni“ only grow in

The fine chestnuts "Maruni“ only grow in the surrounding areas and are included with cherries, wine and olive oil as the traditional products of Lovran.

Lovran's location on the Ucka Mountain makes it the perfect holiday destination for sporty vacationers. The green slopes of the mountains are ideal for extensive hiking or relaxed walks or even for intense mountain bike tours. Those who prefer a little less intensity can go to the beaches of the spa resort and its surrounding areas and just relax. The well- developed Lungomare shore promenade also entices visitors to take strolls along the seaside. The promenade leads through Opatija all the way to the north of the Kvarner bay and continues towards Volosko. The Lungomare is a total of 12 kilometers long, with restaurants and cafés that invite you to come and be spoiled. Along the promenade there are 2 official beaches. Smaller bays and beaches, for the most part, belong to private owners and are closed to public use.
