Nerezine

In the northeast region of the Losinj Island overlooking Cres is the small resort town of Nerezine. If you travel over the bridge from the neighboring island towards the northern tip, Nerezine will be the second town- after Osor- which you will pass through on the Losinj Island in the Kvarner Bay. With approximately 400 inhabitants, this beautiful towns sits at the foot of the Osorscica Mountain: one of the most beautiful island mountains in the Kvarner Bay. There is a nice trail that will lead you from Nerezine to the 589 meter high summit. In 1887 it was where the Austrian-Hungarian heir to the throne, Rudolf of Habsburg, once resided. At that time, the Austria-Hungarian Empire reigned over the Kvarner Bay and ensured that tourism flourished in Nerezine. During this time many grand villas were built on Losinj. The Hapsburg architecture can be seen in south Veli Losinj in particular.

Nerezine is primarily characterized by its typical Croatian stone houses and its beautiful harbor. In the small marina visitors can admire the many historic wooden ships which the inhabitants have been well- known for building for generations. In the old shipyard, work continues as it has been done for decades before. There is another tradition you can delight in at the local restaurants: Fishing. The menus are dominated by tasty fish and seafood meals.
