Oprtalj

Situated atop a hill 380 meters high in the heart of Istria is the picturesque village of Oprtalj. This medieval town was once surrounded by strong walls and still provides guests with an impressive sight. The hilly landscape is lush and green, due to the fertile soil and the mild Mediterranean climate. The climate and soils also make it possible for wine, olives and all kinds of fruits and vegetables to thrive here. Furthermore, the area is rich in wildlife, which is why tourism for hunting has developed so well in recent years here. Oprtalj, however, is famous for a particular specialty: truffles. These fine mushrooms grow in the surrounding forests and are tracked with the help of specially trained truffle dogs. Every autumn is truffle season – when the delicious mushrooms can be savored in Oprtalj.

Oprtalj was first mentioned in 1115 and the architecture of this town enchants visitors with its old world charm. Of particular interest are the religious buildings, such as the parish Church of St. George dating back to the year 1517, which is now home to many valuable works of art today. It is, however, the Brotherhood Church of Saint Mary Magdalene as well as the Church of St. Leonard which are home to some ornate Gothic frescoes, which have made Oprtalj internationally well-known. The picturesque forests and meadows surrounding the town are ideal for long walks and excursions on bike and there are also some fascinating caves that are wonderful to visit.
