Preko

Preko, which means something like "across from" or "on the other side" lies, as the name suggests, directly opposite Zadar and is the economic and administrative center of the Ugljan Island. Preko has diverse tourist infrastructures and houses the most important and largest ferry port on the island. The ferries from here operate to Zadar at regular intervals. Everything you could possible need for a fantastic holiday can be found here from the local cuisine, to its well-developed marina; from its great sandy Jaz Beach located in the town center to its good shopping and leisure activities. As you walk along the well-developed Lungomare promenade you will come across the small fishing boats and yachts moored here in the well-protected harbor of Preko. In the small bay to the east, there is a petrol station for boats.

For certain in this town is its picture-perfect scene representing typical Dalmatian architectural features. These include, in particular, the rustic stone houses of the inhabitants, a Baroque parish church and the Romanesque Church of St. John the Baptist. On the small offshore island of Galevac there is a remarkable Franciscan monastery dating back to the 15th century, as well as many idyllic swimming areas. The countryside is characterized by lush Mediterranean vegetation. It is definitely worthwhile to take a hike or go by bike and explore the hills surrounding Preko by bicycle. There is, for example, a 3 km tour leading to the Fortress of Saint Michael, which dates back to the 13th century and is accessible via a paved road. The fort is perched on a 265 meter high mountain on the south side of the island. From here you can overlook not only the enchanting scenery around Preko, but also the more than 200 islands comprising the Zadar archipelago which includes the Kornati Islands, the Telascica Bay on Dugi Otok, as well as a view of Zadar on the mainland and the mighty Velebit Massif lying further north.
