Primosten - Originally in the Heart

Primosten, a picturesque town in Croatia's North Dalmatia has approximately 2,800 residents and is a popular holiday destination between Sibenik and Split. In summer, the sun shines 14 hours a day. A magnet attracting visitors is its old town, built mainly on a former island. The medieval-looking, romantic, winding streets and small-scale architecture fascinate every single visitor. A gorgeous panorama can be seen from the church hill down into the setting sun.

The former location of the old city on the island has had a major influence on its cityscape. Firstly, the old town with its tightly packed stone houses and its many small cozy places representative of the past was once connected by a bridge to the mainland and now by a dike. A  landmarks of Primosten is the church of St. Juraj, whose spire is visible from afar. The church of St. Juraj, built in the 15th century, stands on the highest point of the old town and gives a magnificent view over the tiled roofs and the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Up here you get a good view of the unique gate. Due to the old city's former location on the island, the city needed no classical fortification. When defense was needed, they simply closed the drawbridge. Residents, however, still wanted a city gate and so the gate now stands in the middle of the old city surrounded by souvenir shops, restaurants and cafés.

The famous discotheque Aurora, which is by the way Dalmatia's biggest club, is located at the gates of the city and appeals to the younger generation. In the summer holidays, there is also much musical entertainment to experience at festivals such as the "Primostenske-uzance". Locals at the festival, display and tell about their traditions and culture with events such as the donkey races and boules tournaments. Here, fresh fish and wine from local viticulture is served. The red wine Babic, which is grown in the region, is very popular. Viticulture, next to the fishing, olive

The red wine Babic, which is grown in the region, is very popular. Viticulture, next to the fishing, olive growing and tourism is one of the most important industries of the region. Original viticulture can be experienced in the Burnji settlement. The settlement of Burnji was the first in Primosten and its three fields supplied all residents. The inhabitants of the Burnji settlement go to great lengths for successful agriculture.  Their lovingly prepared delicacies make a visit definitely worthwhile.

Wonderful delicacies and dishes can also be tasted in the old town and around the marina. There are many good seafood restaurants where everything is prepared with passion: the lobster a la Primosten and even more lobsters and other fish dishes. Head to the taverns to get good cheese, ham and the famous, local Babic red wine.

Excursions in Primosten

The marina is the contact point for hungry visitors and also the ideal starting point for boat trips to nearby islands; or to interesting cities like Sibenik, Split and Trogir. In the summer holidays, if you want to see the natural beauties of Croatia, take a boat ride to Kornati National Park, which extends over several islands near to Sibenik. On the mainland, also near Sibenik, is the Krka National Park, which is famous for its stunning waterfalls, especially for the beautiful "buk Skradinski" waterfall. The picturesque resort of Primosten, therefore, provides an excellent starting point for a perfect holiday.
