Savudrija

The small, ancient fishing village of Savudrija has about 400 inhabitants and is located on the northwest tip of the Istrian peninsula. Here the rich majestic pines and oaks powerfully make their way down to the sea, where, when sitting on the beach, you can hear the wind rustling their leaves. Savudrija is a very small, quiet place where the stresses of everyday life are left behind. Nevertheless, the bustling town of Umag is only five miles away from this oasis of calm.

Savudrija's beginnings as a seaside resort go back to when it was founded as an Austrian sanatorium which can still be visited today. The landmark of Savudrija, however, is the lighthouse built in 1826- which is at the same time the most beautiful, the oldest as well as the most northern lighthouse in Croatia. This lighthouse still warns sailors of the shallow waters and the cliffs. In addition, this fascinating building can also be booked as an extraordinary holiday accommodation. Sadvudrija has a picturesque fishing harbor where you can watch the hustle and bustle of the fishermen. Speaking of fishermen, a special feature of this harbor is worth mentioning: After work, the small fishing boats remain here, but not as elsewhere in the port or at the docks, but are often lifted up out of the water. Powerful wooden frames with attached ropes lift the boats up and let them hang in the air a few meters over the water- a popular photo motif by the way. In the town you will find the wonderful Camping site of Veli Joze, which is geared towards the youth with its extensive sports and leisure facilities. Furthermore, there are some restaurants where you can get to know the local specialties. In and around Savudrija, there are also many excellent wines. Alongside tourism, the locals subsist from fruit and vegetable cultivation.
