Šipanska Luka (Šipan)

Sipan Island is the westernmost of the three major Elaphiti Islands and is located just a few kilometers away from the Peljesac Peninsula and the neighboring Island of Mljet. The main town on the island is Sipanska Luka with 400 inhabitants and it lies in the western region of the isle in a narrow, deep bay. The around 120 locals, who live around the ferry port, mainly subsist from tourism, agriculture and fishing.

Sipanska Luka is a town with a rich historical heritage, which you can experience at the still existing, impressive palaces and mansions: At the entrance, above the coast there is the Rector's Palace, "Knezev Dvor", from the year 145 and in the center of the town you will come across the magnificent local government Opcinski Cathedral which lies opposite another palace. Between the Rector's Palace and the town center, you will find the small Church of Sveti Spas and the parish Church of Sveti Stjepan, which was built in 1252 in the late Gothic style.

The town center's special appeal and charm unfolds as you stroll through the combination of Dalmatian stone houses, ancient palaces, the Church of Sveti Antun and the beautiful park, where lemon, oleander and palm trees grow. Both locals and tourists meet here to play bocce ball. Walking and cycling routes, a canoe and boat rental service, shops and cozy taverns serving local specialties all add to the variety of a vacation here.
