Susak

Susak is only a 3.77 km² sized island that lies in the southwest of the Losinj Isle in the Kvarner Bay. Known as the "Sand Island" Susak is accessible via ferry connections from Mali Losinj and Rijeka. The gentle hills of the island are dominated by vines, blackberries, olives, figs, jasmine and reeds, which gives Susak a very green appearance. Just 200 people live on the island, which is car-free except for a few tractors. They live mostly from agriculture, fishing and tourism.

Nothing from mass tourism can be felt on Susak, which is why the inhabitants still live according to traditional origins. They speak, for example, with the old Croatian dialect "Susacki" and place great value on their traditional costumes. Worth seeing is the church of St. Nicholas (11th century) that hosts a large crucifix (12th century). The lighthouse sitting atop the Garba hill is a beautiful destination for a romantic stroll. For divers the ancient shipwrecks lying off the coast are likely to be a great attraction. Swimmers, on the hand, enjoy the rare, sandy beaches.
