Viganj

Viganj is one of the most westernmost settlements on the Peljesac Peninsula, extending from the coast of the southern Dalmatian mainland to the islands of Korcula and Hvar. This 300 inhabitant-large coastal village is known for its wonderful surfing and sailing spots. The Sveti Ilija Mountain and the island of Korcula ensure that winds of optimum strength blow here regularly. In summer, the Mistral wind is responsible for the good surfing and sailing conditions. Regular competitions are held in Viganj. In addition, tourists can also enjoy playing tennis, soccer and volleyball as well as diving and snorkeling.

A climb to the Church of Sveti Ivan is recommended for those interested in cultural history. The small church is located on a hill with a great view over the Peljesac Channel. Indicative of Viganj is another quite sacred building, namely the Dominican Monastery, located directly in the center. The complex was built in 1671 in the Gothic style. The church has a bell tower, but lacks the bell.

Lining the streets and the quiet coastal road of the village are beautiful gardens just waiting for visitors to delight in and in which a variety of Mediterranean plants can be discovered. According to historical tradition, sailors once gave their wives flowers from overseas and they planted them here. Viganj is therefore often referred to as the "Botanical Garden". The town has decent shopping and a few restaurants and cafés.
