In the Croatian coastal town of Zaostrog, situated between Makarska and Ploce, there are 390 people living there. They have chosen to live in a village that is embedded in a magnificent landscape idyll between mountains and sea – a location responsible for its unique climate. Even before our era, the area had already been settled, which the hand mill from the Neolithic period is evidence of. One of the most important buildings in the village is the Franciscan Monastery of St. Mary, which was built in the 14th century right in the center. The monastery houses an archive, a comprehensive library of 30,000 books and a museum with ethnographic collections. In addition to the Franciscan Monastery, there are three other sacred buildings which are of importance: the Gothic Church of St. Barbara, the 17th century Church of Saint Rocco and the new Church of St. Barbara from the year 1872.

Lying off the beaten tourist track, Zaostrog is varied and exciting - both in terms of historical buildings and in terms of bathing and leisure. One reason why tourists like traveling to Zaostrog is because of its versatile coastline with sandy and rocky beaches and the excellent hiking and mountain biking trails in its mountainous region. At the same time Zaostrog has, in terms of gastronomy, well established typical Dalmatian taverns and international restaurants.
