Iž Island

The 17.6 sq kilometer Iz Island is rather small and lies between Dugi Otok and Ugljan situated off the coast of Zadar. It is the ideal place for independent travelers seeking tranquility and seclusion. Iz is ideal for hiking and cycling, but is also very popular with boaters thanks to its beautiful beaches which are even popular with swimmers. The hilly island is mainly covered with olive trees and scrub and can be reached by a ferry running daily from Zadar. Iz is a paradise for lovers of traditional art and here will find the famous manufactured ceramic and pottery products useful as everyday objects.

Medieval Villages in an Enchanting Landscape

The 500 inhabitants of the island live in the only two villages, Mali Iz and Veli Iz- and they both offer everything a vacationer's heart desires. Here there are accommodations of various standards as well as shopping and restaurants where delicious local Croatian cuisine can be delighted in. Both places are picturesque sights with their narrow, romantic streets and medieval architecture. Veli Iz on the northeast coast of the island has a boat harbor that is very popular with sailors, where the ferries from Zadar also dock. In Veli Iz there is a ceramic factory, which can be visited and their traditional pottery products can be bought as beautiful souvenirs and as unique memories of your Croatian vacation. Another tradition can be experienced at the Iska festa where the king is elected. Originally the tradition was celebrated together with the Christmas fire on December 26th, but due to tourism, it has taken place in July as a tourist attraction since 1970. Also worth a visit is the Ethnographic Museum, which always has changing exhibitions of artifacts from the long history and rich culture of the island. Lying before the harbor of the village is the small, uninhabited island of Rutnjak.

Beaches and Recreational Activities

On Iz there are numerous, quiet beaches, ideal for swimming. The beaches in the vicinity of the two villages are especially suitable for families with young children. The water falls very flatly into the sea, there are sanitation facilities, as well as restaurants and shops in the immediate vicinity. Other quiet beaches are located within easy reach on foot or by bike. Furthermore, they have beach volleyball and tennis courts- the perfect opportunity to actively engage in sports. Iz is also an excellent starting point for day trips to neighboring islands or to the city of Zadar on the mainland. On the island of Dugi Otok there is the sandy, shallow, slowly sloping into the sea, dreamy Bay of Sakarun, very near to Soline. The idyllic bay shimmering in every shade of blue, is very popular for boaters looking for a place to anchor. Boaters, however, can't avoid the spray from the fine sandy beach which is one of the finest in the country and has a truly Caribbean flair.
