Riviera Krka

Vacation in idyllic river landscapre

The seven waterfalls in the national park of Krka whoosh thunderously, while down by the river Krka picturesque towns line up, pierced by the beauty of the Riviera Krka that has its origin in a deeply cutting bay between Vodice and Sibenik. From here, where only the narrow Sibenik channel grants access, the Riviera Krka swerves past Zaton and Blice in the downstream of the river, up towards Skardin where the river landscape changes and eventually leads to the medieval town of Knin far into the hinterland, where the Krka has its source. From here to Sibenik the river runs through an impressive karst area which invites hiking and cycling. This part of Northern Dalmatia, where the Riviera Krka is located, is not only rich in fascinating natural spectacles due to its national parks, but is also diverse in its history, which may be observed in the town of Knin. The old Croatian royal town impresses with an imposing fortress that towers on the mountain Spas and is now the setting for music events and exhibitions.

At the boarder to the national park of Krka lies Skardin, one of the oldest settlements in Croatia with narrow, meandering alleyways and a medieval fortress that presides over the village. Skardin marks the beginning of the Krka’s downstream as well as the boundary to its upstream, because from here on out the water changes its appearance. Here the Krka widens into a large bay – Lake Proklja – that can be reached via boat from the marina in Skardin. Skardin also has an entrance to the national park. On wonderful streets one may cycle from here to the waterfall Skradinski buk. On the opposite side of Lake Prokljan lies the lovely Raslina where one may swim in a unique surrounding near the waterfalls. The small town of Raslina offers a diverse architecture from ancient times as well as remains of churches on the small, nearby island St. Stefan.
