Riviera Novigrad (Zadar)

Calm and repose at the riviera Novigrad at Zadar

The Riviera Novigrad is unique in Northern Dalmatia, as it is not located right by the Adriatic Sea like the other sections of the coast, but lies in a fiord-like bay – the Novigrad Sea close to Zadar, the largest city of the region. The Riviera Novigrad encompasses the main town of the same name as well as the towns of Maslenica, Podgradina, Posedarje, and Pridiga-Cruskijas. Going North towards the Novigrad Sea a unique panorama unfolds as a result of the merging of the rough Velebit-mountains and the deep blue Adriatic Sea.

Spanning a narrow, canyon-like sea channel, the 300 m long Maslenica Bridge marks the “entrance gate” to the Riviera Novigrad. For natives and visitors alike this bridge has recently turned into a place of pure adrenalin, since bungee jumping has become a popular recreational activity and somewhat of a regional attraction. Maslenica is a quiet place with a neat pebble stone beach and a few restaurants that serve regional food. Due to its location the town is the perfect point of departure for trips to the four national parks in the region – the national park Krka, whose correspondent river is great for rafting and canoeing, the national park Kornati, which spans across several islands at the coast off Sibenik, the national park Lake Plitvic located in the hinterland, and national park Paklenica. Except for Kornati, all of these parks were film settings for the Winnetou movies. A bit farther North, one finds the national park Velebit in the homonymous mountains that stretch to the Novigrad Sea.

East of Maslenica, where the inland sea widens into the “Karinsko More” after yet another narrowing, lies Karin Gornji. On the sea route to here one passes by the mouth of the river Zramanja, which on the last few kilometers paves its way through a craggy, sparsely vegetated canyon and thus creates a unique and surreal seeming panorama. Canoeing and rafting on the river Zrmanja are among the local

Canoeing and rafting on the river Zrmanja are among the local recreational activities. The tranquil Karin Gornji provides calm and repose on vacation in Croatia. Northwest of Karinsko More is Pridraga-Cuskijas with its natural pebble and rocky beaches as well as some sandy strips. Pridraga-Cuskijas is particularly suitable for cycling and hiking. Beautiful routes to the towns of Podgradina and Novigrad are easily found.

Novigrad, main town of this Riviera in Northern Dalmatia, fascinates through its picturesque location at the end of an S-shaped curvy bay. The idyllic town exudes a particular Dalmatian charm through its partly morbid stone house architecture and the narrow, uphill little roads. At the top of the hill above the city towers the fortress Castrum Novum. The fortress underscores the city’s former significant strategic location in Northern Dalmatia. Today one may enjoy a fascinating view of the region and the Velebit Mountains from up here. Northwest of Novigrad are the towns of Podgradina and Posedarje, which is widely known for its ham. Ham from Posedarje (Prsut) is carefully smoked over domestic wood and shrubs, so that it eventually acquires its unmistakable flavor.

Whoever is seized by a longing for the great Adriatic Sea can arrive at the coast of Zadar within a few minutes by car. Besides strolling through the historic alleys or visiting the world famous sea organ, one may also plan a trip to the island of Pag – home of the famous Pag chees. One might also drive to the sandy beaches at Nin, which are quite popular among families with children for their gently sloping shores.
