Those who visit the wide, vineyard and olive grove dominated plains of Stari Grad Plain on the island of Hvar are not only astonished at first glance by the fertile greenery, but also by the interesting geometric structures that dominate the landscape as well. Since the time when the Greeks first established their settlements here, basically nothing has really changed in the landscape. This is a powerful reason why the region was put under UNESCO protection in 2008 as the largest fertile plain of the Adriatic islands and as a unique example of ancient land division and use. To date, the Chora, the individual plots, are still visibly separated. Upon closer inspection one finds there is a system of dry-stone walls that graces and shapes the landscape even up until today. The whole system was very progressive and innovative for its time consisting of gutters, storage, cisterns and a rainwater recovery system. Also worth seeing are the ancient residential and outlying buildings, including 60 luxury villas from the Roman times that adorn and emboss the man-made landscape.
