Sumpetar Jesenice

The formerly independent village of Sumpetar lies on the Central Dalmatian coast between Omis and Split. The tranquil village today belongs to the northwest- lying, neighboring town of Krilo Jesenice. Similar to the other villages in the Omis Riviera, Sumpetar is also closely tied to the shipbuilding tradition. The original district, although, is located in the mountains of the surrounding area. The newer district has been established directly on the coast between Krilo Jesenice and Dugi Rat (Duce), which is a town famous for its mile-long stretches of sandy beaches. 

In ancient times, the settlement was known under the name of Narestae. The town's present name comes from a Benedictine monastery which was built in the 11th century and dedicated to St. Peter. This is how the name Sumpetar came about. Even though Sumpetar is only a small settlement, there are many things to be found here: A port as well as various restaurants and taverns. These have all been established along the main road, where there is also a small church. The church and its two short turrets are so well nestled amidst the gardens and buildings that they are hard to find. Two park benches invite you to linger in the shade of the large trees here. If you want to exercise, a day trip into the mountains or to the Cetina River for some rafting is highly recommended.
