Lukovo

Lukovo, with its small population of about 50 houses, is peacefully embedded in the foothills of the Velebit, which extends southeast of the Kvarner bay and lures numerous active vacationers to Lukovo and to the neighboring towns of Senj and Stari Grad. Like a protective cloak sweeping around the village the mountain range surrounds the village, while the narrow Malta Lukovo peninsula provides protection from the sea.

For walkers and climbers, the Velebit offers a variety of challenges. The location of Lukovo off the islands of Krk and Cres, allows boaters to cross quickly through the Kvarner bay. Those desiring to spend some time in the town, should have a look at the prehistoric fort on the Klis hill, where archaeological finds have been made dating back to Illyrian times. The vantage point is within a 15 minute walking distance.

A short boat ride will take you to the cliffs of Lukovacke Grede where you can see drawings made during the late Middle Ages. A charming custom still seen today on the Malta Peninsula are its "Tunere". “Tunere” are high lookout points in the shape of ladders which are drawn up with ropes and pointing diagonally across the bay: they were formerly used in aiding tuna vessels with their work. It is then of no wonder that tuna defines the menu of local restaurants.
